The Federal Government has concluded the evacuation of stranded Nigerians from South Africa following the arrival of the final batch of 308 returnees, bringing an end to the emergency airlift operation coordinated through the Nigerian Mission in Pretoria and relevant government agencies.
The last group of evacuees landed in Nigeria after being airlifted from South Africa, marking the successful completion of the evacuation exercise initiated to assist Nigerians who indicated their willingness to return home.
Officials said the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), and other stakeholders to ensure the safe and orderly return of affected citizens.
Speaking on the exercise, government representatives described the evacuation as part of ongoing efforts to protect the welfare of Nigerians living abroad, particularly during periods of hardship and uncertainty.
The returnees were received by officials on arrival and are expected to benefit from reintegration support coordinated by relevant government agencies.
Authorities also commended the Nigerian Mission in South Africa, partner organisations, and airline operators for their roles in ensuring the smooth execution of the evacuation process.
The completion of the exercise closes the latest government-backed repatriation programme from South Africa, with hundreds of Nigerians now reunited with their families after returning home safely.
