Tension briefly gripped Osogbo, Osun State, on Saturday night after sporadic gunshots were heard around a ward collation centre as the collation of results from the state governorship election was underway.
The incident occurred at the premises of Union Baptist Primary School, which serves as the collation centre for Ataoja D Ward 4 in Osogbo.
According to reports from the scene, the gunshots were heard between about 9:15pm and 9:30pm, forcing residents and others within the vicinity to run for safety.
Security personnel were reportedly responsible for the shots, with several rounds fired into the air. Canisters were also reportedly released within the premises.
The shooting lasted for more than 15 minutes, creating panic among people gathered around the collation centre.
The reason for the incident was not immediately established at the time of reporting.
The development came as electoral officials and party representatives continued the collation of results from polling units across Osun State following Saturday’s governorship election.
The election is a contest involving several candidates, including the Accord Party’s Ademola Adeleke, the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and the African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam.
The incident has heightened concerns over security as the electoral process moves from polling-unit results to ward and local government collation centres.
The authorities are expected to maintain security around collation centres to prevent disruption and ensure that the remaining stages of the electoral process are completed peacefully.
