ILORIN, KWARA STATE — Fear and insecurity have forced residents of Owa Oniire Community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State to abandon their homes, leaving large sections of the community deserted amid persistent attacks by armed bandits.
The alarming situation came to light in a video circulating online, where security operatives deployed to the area expressed concern over the scale of displacement caused by recurring attacks and kidnappings.
According to observations made by officers on the ground, many residents have fled the community in search of safety, leaving behind empty houses, farmlands, and public facilities. The traditional palace of the Owa Oniire was also reported to have been abandoned as residents continue to escape the growing security threats.
The mass exodus reflects the worsening security challenges facing several communities across Kwara State, particularly in parts of Ifelodun and surrounding local government areas, where banditry, kidnappings, and violent attacks have become increasingly frequent.
Residents have repeatedly called on government authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities, arguing that many families have been forced to leave behind their sources of livelihood due to fears of attack.
The latest development comes amid heightened concerns over insecurity in Kwara South and other parts of the state. Recently, residents of Igbowu Community reportedly raised an alarm after suspected bandits allegedly left a threatening message warning of an impending attack, further increasing anxiety among local populations.
Community members have urged security agencies to take proactive measures to prevent further attacks and reassure displaced residents, many of whom remain uncertain about when they can safely return to their homes.
