ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unresolved Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has threatened to resume its suspended nationwide strike if the Federal Government and state governments fail to resolve outstanding issues affecting university lecturers.

The union said it could activate the industrial action without further notice over the incomplete implementation of the December 2025 agreement, payment of the remaining 3.5 months of withheld salaries and the non-remittance of deductions from lecturers’ salaries.

The warning followed an emergency meeting of ASUU’s National Executive Council held at the University of Abuja. In a statement issued after the meeting, the union’s President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, said the December 2025 agreement, reached after years of negotiations, had yet to be fully implemented by the Federal Government and several state governments.

ASUU said the situation was becoming a threat to industrial peace in the nation’s public universities and called for immediate action to prevent another disruption of academic activities.

The union acknowledged the efforts of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and the governments of Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Kebbi, Katsina and Borno, which it said had commenced implementation of the agreement.

It also disclosed that Kano, Edo, Plateau, Taraba, Gombe and Bayelsa states had indicated plans to begin implementation in September or October.

However, ASUU warned other state governments to act promptly, saying failure to do so could push their universities into a serious industrial crisis.

On withheld salaries, the union noted that the Tinubu administration had paid four of the 7.5 months withheld under the previous administration but demanded the immediate payment of the outstanding 3.5 months.

ASUU also raised concerns over billions of naira in unremitted pension contributions, cooperative deductions and union check-off dues allegedly deducted from lecturers’ salaries.

The union maintained that the partial implementation of the 2025 agreement, alongside the outstanding financial obligations, was creating growing frustration among its members.

ASUU urged the Federal and state governments to address the issues without further delay, warning that it would not accept responsibility if the suspended strike was reactivated.

The latest threat adds to a series of disputes between the university lecturers’ union and government over the implementation of agreements and lecturers’ welfare.
