Tinubu Approves Expansion of Legacy Road Projects Nationwide
President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the widening and extension of key road networks across Nigeria, in a move aimed at bolstering connectivity, trade and long‑term development.
The Federal Ministry of Works announced on Friday that Mr. Tinubu directed the expansion of the Bodo–Bonny Road by 8.7 kilometres, linking it more securely to the East–West Road, and approved the construction of the strategic Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Maiduguri highway. These projects are part of the government’s Legacy infrastructure programme, designed to modernise transport routes and strengthen links between regions.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Works Minister David Umahi said Mr. Tinubu instructed officials not only to complete inherited projects but also to increase their scope where necessary to benefit more communities and boost economic activities.
The Bodo–Bonny Road extension aims to improve movement for residents and traders in Rivers State’s coastal settlements and support commerce between oil and gas hubs. Umahi said that the use of reinforced concrete will ensure longevity, with these routes expected to serve Nigerians for decades.
On the northern corridor, construction of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Maiduguri road will connect major commercial and agricultural hubs in the North‑Central, North‑East and Northern regions. Umahi emphasised that work will begin simultaneously at multiple points — including Akwanga, Bauchi, Gombe and Maiduguri — to speed up delivery and maximise economic impact.
“These projects will not only cut travel time and logistics costs,” the minister said, “they will also unlock opportunities for agriculture, tourism and trade along the routes.”
Construction is scheduled to begin in March, with strict adherence to safety and modern engineering standards, officials said. The expanded networks are expected to attract both local and foreign investments by improving access to remote areas and industrial centres.
The projects form part of a broader push by the Tinubu administration to deliver sustainable infrastructure nationwide. Government statements have repeatedly highlighted the importance of durable, long‑lasting roads in promoting economic growth and national integration.
Mr. Umahi also credited the president’s economic reforms for helping stabilise the naira and reduce inflation, factors he believes will further support infrastructure initiatives across sectors.
