INEC Sets February 20, 2027 as Date for Presidential Election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially designated Saturday, February 20, 2027 as the date for Nigeria’s Presidential and National Assembly elections, signalling the formal start of the next general election cycle.
INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan announced the schedule at a news conference in Abuja on Friday, confirming that the polls for the nation’s highest offices will be held on that day.
In addition to the presidential poll, the commission said the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will take place two weeks later, on March 6, 2027.
The announcement comes amid ongoing debate over the Electoral Act amendment bill before the National Assembly. Despite the delay in passing the changes to the law, INEC said it has finalised the dates and will continue to refine the election timetable as needed, in line with legal requirements.
Amupitan explained that fixing the election dates well in advance helps political parties, civil society groups and the electorate plan ahead. Early scheduling, he said, encourages orderly preparations, allows ample time for party primaries, candidate nominations and voter verification, and reduces uncertainty that sometimes arises in the lead-up to national contests.
According to the timetable, once the presidential and legislative elections are completed in February, logistics and personnel will be re-deployed to support the state-level polls in March. INEC officials also cited the constitutional basis for the set dates, noting that the framework for the election cycle complies with relevant sections of Nigeria’s laws.
Civil society and political observers have welcomed the clarity, while some commentators have raised concerns about the President Tinubu administration’s broader electoral reforms and timelines for implementing changes before the 2027 polls.
Looking ahead, political parties are expected to adjust their internal calendars, including primaries and campaign planning, based on the fixed dates. Voters are also being urged to check that their registration details are up to date well before February 2027.
