Gospel Singer Bunmi Omije Ojumi Passes On After Long Battle With Illness

Popular Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye, known to many worshippers as Bunmi Omije Ojumi, has died after battling a prolonged illness.

The singer reportedly passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026, in Lagos, where she had been receiving medical care. News of her death became public on Tuesday following confirmation from close associates and fellow gospel musicians who referenced a message from her family.

Bunmi Omije Ojumi’s health challenges had been a subject of public concern in recent months. Towards the end of last year, videos showing the singer in a weakened state during a church prayer session circulated widely on social media. In the footage, she was seen sitting while prayers were offered for her, with her leg visibly affected by a medical condition.

Shortly after the videos surfaced, several gospel artistes and church leaders raised alarm over her condition and appealed to the public for prayers and financial support to assist with her treatment. Among those who spoke publicly were fellow gospel musicians who confirmed that her illness had worsened over time.

Although details of her ailment were not officially disclosed by her family, sources within the gospel music circle confirmed that she had been undergoing treatment for several months before her death.

The late singer was widely known for her soul-stirring worship songs, particularly “Omije Ojumi,” a Yoruba gospel song that gained popularity for its emotional depth and message of total dependence on God. The song became a regular feature in prayer meetings, church services and personal devotion moments across the country.

Before embracing gospel music fully, Bunmi Akinnaanu was said to have worked in the banking sector. She later left her corporate career to focus on music and ministry, a decision that shaped her identity as a worship leader rather than a commercial artiste.

Since news of her death broke, tributes have continued to pour in from fans, church members and colleagues in the gospel music industry. Many described her as a sincere worshipper whose songs spoke directly to people facing pain, loss and personal struggles.

As at the time of filing this report, the family had not released details of her burial arrangements.

Her passing has left a deep void in the Nigerian gospel music community, especially among worshippers who connected strongly with her music and personal testimony.
