One Dead, Seven Injured in Fresh Zamfara Highway IED Blast

An improvised explosive device (IED) detonated on the Anka-Bagega road in Zamfara State on Tuesday, claiming one life and leaving seven others injured.

The blast occurred as a commercial Volkswagen Golf-3 wagon was traveling from Bagega village toward Anka town. The explosive device struck the vehicle, resulting in the immediate death of one passenger. Seven other occupants sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at a local healthcare facility in Bagega.

This incident marks the second such tragedy on the same transit route in just over a month. On May 8, 2026, an IED explosion in the same area resulted in six fatalities and left six others injured, further heightening security concerns for commuters in the region.

The Commissioner of Police for the Zamfara State Command, CP Ahmad Bello, confirmed the incident to Radio Nigeria. He stated that security forces were mobilized immediately following the report.

”The command dispatched specialized tactical teams to the scene, working in close collaboration with the military,” CP Bello said. He noted that these joint forces were deployed to secure the area, clear the hazardous route, and ensure the restoration of safety for the public.

CP Bello reiterated the Command’s commitment to eradicating banditry and terrorism, citing recent operational successes. While vowing that security agencies would “leave no stone unturned” in the fight against terrorist elements, the Commissioner appealed to the public for sustained cooperation. He emphasized that the provision of credible and actionable intelligence from community members remains vital to maintaining peace and security in the state.
