NEMA receives 178 Nigerian returnees from Libya

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office, in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), has received 178 Nigerian returnees from Tripoli, Libya.

The returnees arrived at about 4 p.m. on Monday, August 10, aboard an Air Buraq Airlines flight that landed at the Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

Their return was facilitated under the Assisted Voluntary Return Programme coordinated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria.

According to NEMA, the returnees comprised 165 adults, including 127 males and 38 females, as well as 10 children and three infants.

Upon arrival, officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) carried out biometric registration and documentation to facilitate proper identification and support the reintegration process.

NEMA and its partner agencies provided immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, potable water, medical screening, ambulance services, luggage handling and other logistical support.

The agency also said counselling and reintegration support were provided to help the returnees transition safely back into their communities.

NEMA noted that the exercise reflects the continued collaboration among NEMA, NCFRMI, IOM, NIS and other stakeholders to ensure that Nigerians returning from abroad are received with dignity and provided with the necessary humanitarian and reintegration assistance.
